(Reuters) – U.S. President-elect Donald Trump said he would meet Russian President Vladimir Putin “quickly” next week.

Asked about his strategy to end the war, Trump told Newsmax: “Well, there’s only one strategy and it’s up to Putin and I can’t imagine he’s too happy about the way it went because he didn’t really go for it.” Or.

“And I know he wants to meet and I know I’ll meet soon. I would have done it sooner but … you have to come into the office. You have to be there for some things.”

US Congressman Mike Waltz, the national security adviser, said on Sunday that he expects a call between Trump and Putin “in the coming days and weeks”.

Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has killed tens of thousands of people, displaced millions and led to the worst rapprochement between Moscow and the West since the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis.
