China is reportedly open to Elon Musk acquiring TikTok US

Chinese government officials have discussed a scenario in which ByteDance sells TikTok’s US arm to Elon Musk, The Supreme Court on January 19 upheld the law banning the app.

Bloomberg reported China would strongly prefer TikTok to remain under ByteDance’s ownership, but said government officials are considering a sale to Musk as part of a broader plan to work with incoming President Donald Trump’s administration. In that scenario, Musk’s X would acquire TikTok US, effectively taking over the vertical video platform’s 170 million American users and billions in potential ad revenue.

A TikTok spokesperson called the report “pure fiction” in a statement diversity

The report says it’s unclear how much ByteDance and TikTok knew about China’s discussions of a Musk sale, potentially highlighting China’s alleged influence over the platform that brought about the legislation in the first place.
