Israel’s far-right National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Givir said on Thursday that he would withdraw his Jewish Power party from Benjamin Netanyahu’s government if the Gaza ceasefire was implemented.
Mediators said on Wednesday that Israel and Hamas had Agreed to a multi-level agreement to end the 15-month war and free the 98 hostages still held in Gaza.
However, Ben-Gvir and his hard-line ally, Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, have repeatedly maintained that they will resign if the Netanyahu government accepts a deal to end the war.
Ben-Gvir reiterated that threat on Thursday, but said his party could return to government if it continues to fight.
Netayahu Cabinet will meet on Friday. An Israeli official said the prime minister had earlier postponed a meeting to discuss ratifying the Gaza ceasefire, accusing Hamas of backtracking on the deal.
The Jewish resignation leaves Netanyahu’s coalition with two seats in Israel’s parliament.
Smotrich’s Religious Zionist Party will step up pressure to leave Netanyahu’s government, a move that could cost the veteran prime minister his majority.
This is a developing story.
