OpenAI suggests traits like “chatty,” “enthusiastic,” and “Zen Z.”
It is important to note that this is not related to ChatGPT memories feature, which allows users to explicitly tell ChatGPT to remember — or forget — something. Somewhat confusingly, ChatGPT “memories” can be personal details – but they can also cover a wide range of conversation-relevant information.
“Introduce yourself to get a better, more personalized response,” reads a message on the refreshed menu.
Options for this reporter are not yet showing. TechCrunch has reached out to OpenAI for comment and will update this article when we hear back.
Perhaps the new menu is more of an aesthetic change than a deep technical upgrade. Old custom instructions feature used ChatGPT is known for prompt engineering to guide its style and tone. Essentially, it “primes” the AI powering ChatGPT with a paragraph of user-supplied instructions so that its replies conform to those needs and preferences.
As far as we can tell, the new menu still relies on prompt engineering. It simply presents it in a user-friendly way.
OpenAI has previously stated that it applies moderation to custom directives to check that they comply with the terms of use. Presumably, it hasn’t changed with the changed personalization settings.
OpenAI has looked to polish ChatGPT as its user base grows, adding capabilities like Live web search and a “canvas” The interface is useful for writing and coding projects. The company said in December that more than 300 million people use the chatbot every week.
