Proud Boys Leaders to Walk Free After Trump Releases All January 6 Rioters

“These people have been destroyed, what they’ve done to these people is reprehensible, nothing like it has ever happened in the history of this country,” Trump said Jan. 6 from the Oval Office. He also floated conspiracy theories that “outside agitators” and the FBI were somehow responsible for the violence that occurred on January 6.

Trump teased the pardons coming from his event at Capital One Arena earlier Monday, promising the imminent release of the “J6 hostages.”

Reached by phone earlier Monday, Duarte told Wired they expect Enrique’s release. “The boys are excited and feel that justice will finally come to us,” Duarte said. “Donald Trump knows what it’s like to be on the side of the accused and on the wrong side of things.”

Asked if Tario was still involved with the Pride Boys, Duarte replied: “That’s a question you’ll have to ask him when he’s out.”

Before Trump even put ink to paper, news that January 6-ers had begun the process to release correctional facilities began circulating online. Social media accounts linked to the Proud Boys rejoiced, and Gavin McInnes, who founded the Proud Boys in 2016, announced a “party for the boys” on a livestream of his show while collecting donations to support released gang members.

As for the first day’s work, it was stunningly symbolic. Four years ago, on January 6, 2021, thousands of Trump supporters, fueled by conspiracy theories about the 2020 election, descended on DC and surrounded the Capitol in an attempt to prevent a peaceful transfer of power. The ugly scene ended with five people dead, more than 140 police officers injured, and Trump leaving Washington in disgrace.

A few weeks later, Joe Biden was sworn in as the 46th President of the United States behind riot barriers, barbed wire and under the eyes of more than 25,000 National Guard troops.
