US President Donald Trump has pardoned 23 abortion activists, including some convicted of blocking a reproductive health clinic and scary employees and patients.
The pardon was part of a circle of executive orders signed by Trump on Thursday, one of several in the first week of his Presidency.
Trump described beliefs as “ridiculous”, but abortion rights have said this move is evidence of his opposition to access to abortion.
The order came the day before the protesters against abortions came to Washington for the annual life march that the president should turn to Videolink.
In 2020, Trump became the first sedentary president to attend the rally personally, although George in Bush and Ronald Reagan also turned to him remotely.
Vice President JD VANCE will attend personally this time.
The rally has been held in the US capital every year since 1974, a year after abortion was legalized by the Rowe Supreme Court against Wade.
Abortion rights are a key issue in the last presidential competitions, and the court quashed the decision in 2022.
Signing the pardon, Trump said of the activists: “They should not be persecuted. Many are the elderly … It’s a great honor to sign this. They will be very happy.”
US media reports that one of these pardoned is Lauren Handy, the leader of the group progressive uprising against abortion (PAAU).
The group was convicted of conspiracy in 2020 for storming the Washington Reproductive Health Clinic and blocking access to intimidation of patients and staff. The members imposed their way to surgery, hurting a nurse and spending a few hours inside.
Handy was found guilty in August 2023 and sentenced in May 2024.
Her supporters have welcomed the pardon, saying that beliefs are political.
Susan B President Anthony Pro-life America Marjori Danenfeller said the protesters were directed by Joe Biden’s Justice Ministry, and she thanked Trump for “fulfilling her promise” to pardon them.
But abortion rights have said the pardon confirms their belief that Trump is an anti-abort, although he announces during his presidential campaign that individual countries have to decide whether to resolve the practice.
Ryan Stitzlein of the National Abortion Rights Organization Reproductive Freedom for all said to AP Agency: “Donald Trump on the campaign trail tried to do it in both directions – boasts his role in turning Roe V Wade while saying, that he will not take action on an abortion.
“We have never believed that this is true and that shows us that we were right.”
