President Donald Trump has said he believes the United States will gain control of Greenland after they have been renewed in recent weeks to acquire the autonomous Danish territory.
“I think we will have it,” he told Air Force One reporters on Saturday, adding that 56,000 residents of the island “want to be with us”.
His comments come after messages that Danish Prime Minister Met Fredericksen insisted that Greenland was not sold in a fiery phone call with the President last week.
Trump first sailed the prospect of buying the territory during his first term in 2019 and said that US control over Greenland was an “absolute necessity” for international security.
“I think people want to be with us,” Trump said in the presidential plane press hall.
“I don’t really know what Denmark has to do with it, but it would be a very unpleasant act if they don’t allow it to happen, because it’s about protecting the free world,” he added.
“I think we will get Greenland because it is related to the freedom of the world,” Trump continued.
“It has nothing to do with the United States except that we are the one who can secure freedom. They can’t.”
