A total of 200 Palestinian prisoners were put on fun scenes on the west coast after Israel released them in exchange for four hostages held by Hamas in Gaza.
More than half of the released 200 have served life sentences in Israeli prisons – some have been convicted of multiple killings, including the murder of Israeli civilians. Others have never been charged with a crime.
About 70 of the most serious offenders were deported through Egypt in neighboring countries, including Qatar and Turkey.
A smaller number will be sent to gas. The rest – just over 120 – will be allowed to return to their homes on the west coast and East Jerusalem.
“After completing the necessary activities in prisons and approval of political authorities, all terrorists were released from the prisons of OFER and KTZIOT,” an Israeli prisoner statement said.
Some of the released prisoners were raised to a height of crowds to strong cheers and fireworks after they got off the buses.
Then there was a struggle as they tried to find their relatives and family members before they were transferred to a sports complex where the festivities continued.
“Thank God! It’s a great feeling that I can’t describe this feeling! I was in prison for six years and two months,” said prisoner Backer Quaauish after getting off one of the buses dressed in gray prisoners.
The youthful Palestinian prisoner, released on Saturday, was 16 years old. The oldest, Mohammed al-Tos, was 69 years old. He had spent 39 years in prison after being arrested for the first time in 1985 while fighting the Israeli forces.
Another prisoner, Mohammed Al-Arda, was part of a high-ranking Jailbreak in 2021.
A total of 121 of the released prisoners served a life sentence.
Some of the prisoners have been held for short periods of time, and some have never been charged with a crime but have been held under something called administrative detention.
The size on Saturday was the second exchange since it entered into force on January 19. Three hostages and 90 Palestinian prisoners were released into the first UAP.
During the release of prisoners last week, there was a noticeable display of support for Hamas, but on Saturday Fatah, the ruling party on the west coast, which dominated the Palestinian power (PA), proved to show its support for the prisoners.
Early on Saturday, Four female Israeli soldiers taken as hostages from Hamas on October 7, 2023 were released from Gaza.
Karina Ariev, Daniela Gilboa, Nama Levy and Liri Albag, all between the ages of 19 and 20, were released to the Red Cross in the city of Gaza during a highly choreographed show, including dozens of Hamas artillerymen.
However, Israel has accused Hamas of breaking the conditions of fire cessation, since the female civilian hostage Arbel Yehud was not included in the Saturday version.
Israel said this would delay the planned return of the displaced Palestinians to Northern Gaza while Hamas insisted that the hostage would be released next weekend.
The fire termination deal in January stopped the war that began when Hamas attacked Israel on October 7, 2023. About 1,200 people were killed and 251 taken back to Gaza as hostage.
More than 47,200 Palestinians, the majority of civilians, have been killed in Israel’s offensive, says Gaza Health Ministry.
