Colombia President Gustavo Petro says migrants are not criminals and should be treated with “dignity”

US President Donald Trump said she would impose 25% of Colombia’s duties and sanctions after her president banned two US military aircraft with deported migrants to land in the country.

Trump said that extraordinary duties “on all goods” coming to the United States from Colombia will be introduced “immediately”, and after a week the 25% duties will be increased to 50%.

Colombian President Gustavo Petro said earlier on Sunday that he refused to enter Colombian land on US military aircraft carrying deported migrants.

Petro said he “would accept our fellow citizens on civilian planes without treating them as criminals” and said that migrants should be returned “with dignity and respect.”

US officials told the US partner of BBC, CBS News that two San Diego military aircraft had to land in Colombia on Sunday with deported migrants, but these plans were canceled due to complications.

In response, Trump announced “emergency and decisive responding measures” in a Truthsocial publication. He said the United States would impose a ban on travel and “immediate visening” by the Colombian government officials, as well as its allies and supporters.

Trump also said there would be visa sanctions for supporters of the Colombian Government and increased inspections of customs and border defense “of all Colombian citizens and cargo for national security reasons.”

“These measures are only the beginning,” Trump added, saying that his administration would not allow the Colombian government to “violate his legal obligations regarding the adoption and return of criminals who are forced to enter the United States.”

The United States imports about 20% of its coffee – worth nearly $ 2 billion – from Colombia, as well as other goods such as bananas, raw oil, avocado and flowers.

The duties will make it more expensive, which – if it is transferred to the user – can mean an increase in coffee prices.

Sanctions against the Colombian Government and its supporters and the collapse in diplomatic relations for which it signals are very significant.

Trump’s election as Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau claims that “working with other countries to stop such migration flows” should be a “global imperative of US foreign policy”.

Tens of thousands of migrants from around the world, from India to China, head north to the United States after landing in South America and traveling up through Colombia, usually assisted by criminal groups.

This move will undoubtedly make it difficult for the Trump administration to work with Colombia to stop this.

Also on Sunday, Petro said more than 15,666 Americans were illegal in Colombia, a figure that the BBC failed to check independently.

Petro said that unlike the Trump administration, he “will never” be seen to carry out an action to return illegal US migrants.

The feud between the two nations comes after the Trump administration has vowed to carry out “mass deportations”. The president signed numerous executive orders related to immigration on his first day of office.

Some of Trump’s executive orders have been signed in order to extend the capabilities of immigration and customs authorities (ICE) to arrest and retain illegal migrants in the United States.

White House spokesman Carolyn Leevit said 538 arrests were made on Thursday alone.

For comparison, ICE detained more than 149,700 people in the fiscal 2024 with the Biden administration, which equals an average of 409 per day.

Trump has declared a national emergency on the border with Mexico, ordered employees to refuse the right to citizenship to the children of migrants in the United States illegally or with temporary visas and again apply his policy “Stay in Mexico” from his first term.

On Saturday, US Vice President Jay Di Vance told CBS’s Face the Nation that he supported “the implementation of the law against cruel criminals.”

“Just because we are founded by immigrants, it doesn’t mean that 240 years later we have to have the most stupid immigration policy in the world,” he told Margaret Brenon of CBS.

Tom Homan, Trump’s Border Tsar told ABC News on Sunday that the military is currently at the US -Mexico border and assist in the departure flights of military aircraft and the construction of infrastructure to secure the border.

“This sends a strong signal to the world: our border is closed,” he said.

Trump is campaigning to secure the southern border and reduce the number of immigrants without documents entering the United States.
