The man accused of burning the residence of Pennsylvania governor Josh Shapiro in April was sentenced to 25 to 50 years in the State Prison as part of a legal basis agreement.

Cody Balmer, 38, pleaded guilty to attempted murder, aggravated arson, 22 charges of arson, burglary and other crimes at a hearing on Tuesday.

While the official residence in the capital of the state Harisburg was severely damaged during the fire, people at the time – including Shapiro, his wife, his four children and guests and employees – managed to escape from unharmed.

Shapiro said his family supported the legal basis agreement announced by prosecutors.

The attack on the governor and his family is part of a wave of political violence in the United States, including an attempt to abduct Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer, two attempted murder against President Donald Trump, the killings of two Minnesota civil servants and the murder of commentator Charlie Kirk.

At a press conference on Tuesday, the Pennsylvania Governor, standing with his wife, said his family had to lean on his faith as they moved with a difficult recovery after the attack.

“We will be changed forever by this, we know that time will be healed, but the scars will remain,” Shapiro said.

Balmer was accused of invading the Genor’s residence and setting him on the second day of Passover. The Governor, who is a Jew, hosted the Easter holiday last night.

Balmer had admitted to employees that he had removed gas from a lawn mower and poured it into bottles of beer to make Molotov cocktails he used in the attack, Pennsylvania State police said.

He turned after 13 hours after the breakthrough and acknowledged that he was “applying hatred to governor Shapiro,” officials said.

Balmer was asked in a police interview what he would have done if he had faced his face with Shapiro. He told the police that he would beat the governor with a hammer, according to a declaration.

Shapiro has been the manager of Pennsylvania since 2023 after working as a Prosecutor General of the State.

The Democrat was in the best election to be the ruling half of Kamala Harris during the 2024 presidential election, but he had eventually passed. He is often mentioned as a possible future presidential candidate.
