A 30-year-old woman has become the third man who died of methanol poisoning in the Brazilian state, Sao Paulo, as authorities are investigating the source of tainted drinks that are thought to be ill.
Bruna Araújo de Souza died after consuming a vodka drink at a bar more than a week ago, according to officials in Sao Bernardo. This comes after health officials announced the death of two men.
So far, there are a total of 225 confirmed cases of methanol poisoning in Brazil, according to the Ministry of Health’s latest update. Most of them were in Sao Paulo.
At least 11 businesses are closed and more than 10,000 bottles of alcohol seized by the authorities.
It is unclear whether pollution was intentional or accidental and people are asked to avoid consumption of beverages without labels, printed stamps or tax marks.
Methanol is a type of alcohol that is usually found in cleaning products, fuel and antifreeze. It is highly poisonous, even in small quantities.
The symptoms of methanol poisoning are similar to a hangover, which means that it may be difficult for a person to know if he has been affected.
Souza was hospitalized in critical condition and the tests showed that she had methanol in her system, as well as her boyfriend, according to an obituary published online. She was later confirmed that she was dead brain.
The two were killed in Brazilian media such as Marcos Antonio Jorge Genor and Ricardo Lopez Mira. They are both from the city of Sao Paulo,
The 54 -year -old Mira died on September 16 after he became ill a few days before, while 46 -year -old Junior died on October 2 after drinking vodka at a bar.
Both Sao Paulo and national health officials claim to investigate other suspects of methanol poisoning.
The Bar Manager near Avenue Paulista, one of the most busy areas in Sao Paulo, told the Associated Press: “Customers are worried and we advise them to not drink cocktails.”
Among those who are hospitalized with the suspected methanol poisoning is Brazilian rapper Hungria, who posted a photo of himself in a social media hospital with an inscription saying “If you feel thirsty, find a safe place to drink.”
The Minister of Health in Brazil Alexander Padil has defined the situation as “abnormal and, unlike anything else in our history regarding the poisoning with methanol in the country.”
