Australian movie is changing in China to make the gay couple straight

Australian film, which was changed digitally, to change the heterosexual pair, attracted a reaction from moviegoers in China.

Together, the horror movie starring Dave Franco and Alison Brie was shown in chosen Chinese cinemas in advance at screenings on September 12th. Later, Cinemagoers realized that some scenes were modified after screenshots showing the original scenes became viral online.

The film was to be published publicly on September 19 – but since Thursday it has not been aired in theaters.

The global film distributor, Neon, later condemned the editorial office, saying that they did not “approve (this) unauthorized editing … and demanded that they have stopped distribution,” according to reports.

The horror film of the supernatural body, written and directed by Australian Michael Sheng, follows a couple who moves to the countryside and turns out to have a mysterious power that affects their bodies, life and relationships.

The film, which premiered the Sundance Film Festival for the first time in January and released in the US and Australia in July, has largely received positive reviews from critics, winning a 90% evaluation of the freshness of the Rotten Tomatoes review site.

But as the advance screenings began in China this month, viewers noticed that some scenes of sex and nudity were modified after screenshots showing scenes from the original version, distributed online.

In a scene that depicted the male lead in the shower, they noticed that the Chinese version had added steam to obscure the naked lead of lead.

Most complaints, however, were about an image involving a gay couple that was digitally changed with the man’s face replaced by the woman. Several references to the relationships of same -sex in the film have also been removed.

It is not uncommon for China – where same -sex marriage is not recognized and LGBT themes remain largely taboo – to censor LGBT content. But this time the use of what seemed to be generated by AI changes has reached a nerve.

“This is no longer just a matter of cuts – it’s a matter of distortion and misconception,” said a publication in the popular Chinese critic Douban, where the film has a score of 6.9 out of 10.

“They not only changed the story, but also dismissed the actor’s sexual orientation. It’s disgusting,” another said.

On Wednesday, the Global Distributor of the film, Neon, spoke against editing, criticizing the Chinese distributor of the movie Hishow, who has not yet commented on the issue.

“Neon does not approve of the unauthorized editorial of Hishow’s film and asked to stop distributing this changed version,” a company said to the BBC said in a statement.

This is not the first time China has used AI to change sexual content. In the movie, won with Oscar Oppenheimer, a bare scene starring Florence Pue was edited with an Ai -AI black cinemas for Chinese cinemas.
