Eleven people detained in Ghana after being deported from the United States have sued the government of Western Africa in the country, their lawyer told the BBC.
Oliver-Barker Vormavour said the deportes had not violated any Ganai law, and their detention in a military camp was illegal.
He wanted the government to produce the group in court and to justify why they were held against their will, the lawyer added.
The government has not yet commented on the lawsuit, but earlier stated that it plans to accept another 40 deported. Opposition deputies require the immediate suspension of the deportation transaction until parliament ratifies it, saying that it was necessary under Ghana law.
Last week, Ghana President John Mahama said 14 Western African deported in the country had arrived in the country following an agreement reached with the United States.
Later, he said that they were all returned to their sides of origin, although Foreign Minister Samuel Okudze Ablaqua was contrary to him, saying that only most of them were returned.
The statement by the court of G -n Vormawor contradicts the two, saying that 11 deportors are still in custody in Ghana.
The 11 were kept in US detention before being chained and deported to a military freight aircraft, according to documents filed in court.
Deportations are part of the US government’s firm approach to immigration after President Donald Trump took office in January.
He vowed to illegally conduct migrants’ deportations in the country.
The Ghana Foreign Minister was quoted on Monday by Reuters news agency, saying that the decision to adopt the deported was based on a “humanitarian principle and a general African empathy”.
“This should not be misinterpreted as the approval of Trump’s immigration policies,” he said.
Five of the detainees, three Nigerians and two Gambians, also judged the US government, claiming they were protected from a court order and should not have been deported.
