An Azerbaijan Airlines plane carrying 62 passengers and five crew members crashed while landing at the Kazakhstan airport. 29 people survived, including two children, and were hospitalized.
Videos on local media show a huge explosion after the plane crashed in an empty field. Footage from the scene shows passengers being helped by emergency crews from the tailgate.
Those on board were from Azerbaijan, Russia, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan, Russia’s RIA news agency reported, citing the Ministry of Transport of Kazakhstan.
Local media reported that nine of those taken to hospital are in serious condition and search and rescue operations are underway.
The Embraer 190 was en route from Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan, to Grozny, in the southern Russian republic of Chechnya, but diverted into the air after flying through heavy fog.
Earlier media reports said the flight had hit a flock of birds, causing the aircraft to lose control.
“Due to an emergency on the plane after a collision with a bird, the commander decided to go to another airport and the sputum was chosen,” Ria was quoted as saying by the Russian aviation agency Rosaviasia. Local media have shared unconfirmed reports of an oxygen tank explosion on the plane, causing many passengers to self-conscious.
Baku has sent an official delegation to Kazakhstan to investigate the case, Azerbaijan’s APA news agency reported. President Ilham Aliyev has left the Commonwealth of Independent States meeting in Russia to return to Baku. He also expressed his condolences to the affected families.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed his condolences to the Azerbaijani leader.

Photos on social media showed relatives gathering at Grozny airport to hear news of their loved ones.
A man at Grozny airport says he has just received a video of his niece, a passenger on the plane, who survived. “I’m really happy,” he told a news reporter.
