Eclipse in Spain and Portugal “First of its kind”, the report finds

The power tide, which has caused a wide eclipse in Spain and Portugal, has been the “most severe” in Europe in the last 20 years, and the first of its kind found a report.

Damian Cortinas, President of the ENTSO-E electricity operators Association, said the incident is the first known eclipse caused by an overvoltage that occurs when there is too much electrical voltage on a network.

“This is a new territory,” Cortinas said, adding that the role of Entso-e “does not distribute the guilt of any country” because of the cause.

April interruption caused significant disturbances for almost one day when it is immersed in the dark areas, cutting the Internet and telephone connections and stopping transport connections.

The eclipse affected large parts of Spain and Portugal and briefly affected southwestern France.

The report, published on Friday, focuses on the state of the power systems on the day of the interruption and the sequence of events leading to it.

A series of cascading overvoltages – increasing the electrical supply voltage above the established norm – standing behind the interruption, she concluded.

The overvoltage can be caused by jumps in nets due to over -maintenance or lightning or when the protective equipment is insufficient.

According to the report, automatic defense plans were activated but could not prevent the power supply.

This is followed by several separate investigations and reports by the Spanish government, as well as power and network companies. The national energy guard and Spanish legislators also conduct separate investigations.

The Spanish government believes that the Entso-E report supports its own findings.

Sarah Age, Minister of the Environmental Transition, said it was “completely in line” with the results of the investigation, which was commissioned, which concluded in June that the national Red Eléctrica network supplier and private electric companies were guilty.

Both Red Eléctrica and private companies insisted that they were not guilty. Redia, the owner of Red Eléctrica, has accused the eclipse of some coal, gas and nuclear power plants to help maintain the right voltage.

Spanish utilities said this was caused by poor planning by GRID operators.

The Entso-E report also states that some important data are missing and that “the collection of full, high quality data proved to be very challenging for this investigation.”

A final report, which will be published in the first quarter of next year, will investigate the main reasons for overvoltage and actions used to control the tension in the system.

The interruption caused a broader debate, which spilled into the political arena on Spain’s energy model.

The opposition suggested that an increasing renewal of renewable energy encouraged by the leftist government of Pedro Sanchez could be a factor in causing eclipse and reducing nuclear energy supplies to the country meant that a reliable reserve reserve is not available.

The government rejected these theories, and the new report was careful to avoid taking countries when it came to the reasons for the unprecedented eclipse in April.

The loss of power forced Madrid tennis organizers to stop the match halfway through play.

The Spanish nuclear power plants automatically stopped at the impact of the eclipse, and the Spanish oil company Moeve said it had stopped its operations on oil refineries.

Buildings were immersed in darknessWhile mobile phones and traffic lights stopped working. The tails broke through the street corners and card payments failed, forcing people to queue for money and to attack buses, as other transport systems do not work.

Emergency workers were called into 286 buildings to be trapped in the lifts in the Madrid area, and hospitals performed plans for emergencies, stopping routine procedures.
