New York Mayor Eric Adams has announced that he is terminating his re -election offer just five weeks before voters go to the ballot box.
Adams said that “permanent media speculation” about his future and the decision of the Council to finance the city campaign to refuse him publicly coinciding funds, transferred his campaign.
His withdrawal narrows the race to Democrat Zhodi Mamdani, former governor Andrew Quomo and Republican candidate Curtis Sliva.
Adams, elected in 2022 as a Democrat, is running for an independent after being charged with alleged bribery and fraud. Later, the prosecution was dismissed as instructed by the Trump administration.
“I can’t continue my re -election campaign,” Adams said in a video posted on social media on Sunday.
“Permanent media speculation about my future and the council’s decision to fund the campaign to refuse millions of dollars have undermined my ability to raise the funds needed for a serious campaign.”
Adams has not approved any of its rivals in the competition. But he made comments in his statement of withdrawal, which seemed to be aimed at Zhodi Mamdani, the nominees for the Democrats and the front athlete in the race.
“The basic change is welcome and necessary, but beware of those who claim that the answer to the destruction of the system itself we have built together for generations,” he said, without naming cheats, a self -recorded socialist. “This is not a change, it’s chaos.”
Adams warned that the “insidious forces” are promoting “dividing programs” in urban policy.
Once regarded as a rising star in New York politics, the former police officer’s popularity has decreased due to accusations of corruption, tension with democrats from immigration, and powerlessness from increasing costs for the city’s life.
In the indictment last September, it is alleged that Adams accepted gifts totaling over $ 100,000 (£ 75,000) from Turkish citizens in exchange for services. He denied any misconduct and admitted that he was not guilty.
In April, the Ministry of Justice ordered federal prosecutors in New York to refuse the allegations. But the dispute continued to pursue Adams as he gave up the re -election race.
His relationship with the Democrats worsened during the Biden administration as he criticized his immigration strategy.
Earlier this year, he said he would run as an independent – a move that spared him from the competitive democratic primary that was won by Mamdani.
Adams will endure the rest of his term, which ends on January 1st. His name will remain on the newsletter because the deadline to change is passed.
