The newly elected mayor in West Germany is stabbed and left critically wounded near her home, police say.

57-year-old Iris Stalzer is a member of the Social Democratic Party in the Center (SPD) and becomes mayor of Herdecke in Westphalial Westphalia in September in September.

Local police claim that a major operation is taking place in the small town. Investigators say all roads are being studied, but they do not rule out a family relationship.

Chancellor Friedrich Merz condemned what he called a “disgusting act”, adding: “We are afraid of the life of the elected mayor, Iris Stalzer and we hope for a complete recovery.”

SPD said members of his party were deeply shocked by the attack.

Officials claim that the two adopted children of Stalzer – at 17 and a 15 -year -old son – called in an emergency call to the authorities at lunchtime local time (11:00 BST).

Later, the children were taken for questioning and forensic investigation. The accident reporter noticed a teenager who enters a police patrol car.

This summer there was an incident of domestic violence in the family, which was recorded by police, security sources said.
