HBO Pulls the Plug on The Franchise

Franchise, HBO’s satire The superhero genreAccording to was canceled after a single season time limit.

Created by John Brown and executive produced by Sam Mendes and Armando Iannucci, the half-hour comedy ended in November. A statement from the network thanked the trio, plus the show’s “hilarious ensemble of actors. We are grateful to have had the opportunity to work with the incredibly talented team behind D Franchise. […] While we won’t be moving forward with another season, we look forward to collaborating with all of them in the future.”

As its title implies, Franchise Centers on a film crew working on a film connected to a huge superhero franchise. Himesh Patel stars as assistant director and closet nerd Daniel Kumar, and fittingly, some of the show’s cast have played superheroes before. Nanny Cash plays Daniel’s ex Anita the boys storm aheadand Richard E. Grant and Daniel Brühl were hired by Marvel. Although it appears to have made a decent impression with critics and audiences, Deadline notes that the show failed to ever crack the top 10 Nielsen rankings during its eight-episode run.
