“Spring forward; fall back.” We all use memory to remember how much pain is coming when time changes. It reads, less painful, and since everyone’s smartphone time now changes itself, your alarm will feel like it’s going off an hour late. Pro: You can get more sleep. Con: Your cat won’t notice what the clock says and will wake you up to feed at 7am instead of 8am.
But if you don’t change the time for more than a moment’s thought and you’re awake tonight as the transition from daylight saving to standard time takes place, here’s literally what’s going to happen.
Time is tweaked right now, with the days unusually stretched to give us more daylight. All places that observe daylight saving time agree that during sunny months, astronomical high noon—the point at which the sun is straight—is 1:00 p.m.
If you watch the time change between morning and afternoon on your smartphone or smartwatch, you can literally see the time. If you’re using an Android phone, set your lock screen clock to analog Settings > Style. If you’re on an iPhone, just look at the Clock app icon, which is a fully functional analog clock In my experience, the time change occurs at 2:00:01 am on Apple devices. I don’t know why
When the big moment comes, the little hand will swing back to the left and your perception of measurable time as a fixed law of the universe will break. Truth will be exposed as an artificial construct, and what you believe to be meaningful will be replaced with a void.
For one hour, you will now exist in a sort of extraterrestrial. You shouldn’t be awake. If you’ve ever read Stephen King’s LangoliersYou know what to expect in this area. There are no birds in the sky. Food tastes stale. Your lungs feel empty of air. The machines don’t work. A giant deformed mouth can eat you. normal (Of course I’m kidding. But read on Langolier.)
And you’re probably going to hate what happens tonight: the clock time you associate with sunset on November 1 will now suddenly move an hour earlier than November 2, meaning the day will feel “an hour shorter.” The sun will dip below the horizon in the late afternoon, and you’ll suddenly feel vampiric and nocturnal, eating dinner late at night. Young children not used to staying up late will suddenly think they are learning the secrets of the night, because they are.
Oh, and don’t forget to manually change the small clock by your car’s speedometer. That one is really important.
