American acting legend Redford, known for roles in Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid and Sting, died at the age of 89.

In a statement, his publicist Cindy Berger said: “Robert Redford died on September 16 at his Sundance home in the mountains of Utah – the place he loved, surrounded by those he loved. He will be missed. The family wants confidentiality.”

The Oscar -winning star from Africa was also known for establishing the Sundance Film Festival in Utah.

He won an Oscar award for the best director in 1980 for ordinary people. Redford announced that he was withdrawing from acting in 2018, saying in 2016 that he “was tired of acting.”

Redford’s other roles included the candidate, all the president’s men and an obscene proposal.

It was Butch Cassidy, a western movie about two risk robbers who takes bank robbers, turned Redford star overnight, but he was never comfortable with his label as a good looking heart rate.

“People were so busy, related to how I look like it was a miracle that I didn’t become a protoplasm self -conscious spot. It’s not easy to be Robert Redford,” he once told New York magazine.

Part of the new Hollywood movie movement from the late 1960s, he reunited with his colleague star Paul Newman – who appeared with Butch Cassidy – for crime Caper Sting in 1973, is also considered a classic.

Despite their long -standing friendship and on screen chemistry, the couple never appeared on the screen again.

Redford’s biggest contribution to the film was probably the Sundance Film Festival, which helped to strengthen the independent movie creation in the late 1980s and early 1990s to compete with the period that started his career.

Redford leaves behind his wife, Sibil Shaggars, whom he married in 2009, according to CBS News.

He was previously married to Lola Van Wagen – the couple had four children before divorcing in 1995.

One of their children, Scott, died at the age of two months from the sudden death of babies, CBS reports, and James died of cancer in 2020.

He survived two daughters – Shauna, an artist, and Amy, director.
