(Reuters) – Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter, who died on Sunday at the age of 100, will be given a state funeral on Jan. 9 at the Washington National Cathedral, the U.S. military said.

US President Joe Biden, who said he had asked Carter to deliver his eulogy at his funeral last year, has ordered a national day of mourning for Carter on January 9 across the US.

Carter’s official six-day funeral will begin Saturday with his body in his hometown of Plains, Georgia, the Army said in a statement.

The engine that carried Carter stops on the farm where he grew up. There, the National Park Service rings the historic farm bell 39 times – Carter was the 39th President of the United States.

Carter’s (NYSE:) remains will then be taken to Atlanta, where he will lie in state at the Carter Presidential Center until the morning of January 7. U.S. Capitol alter until the national funeral.

The family will hold a private funeral and reception in Georgia on January 9 after a memorial service at Washington National Cathedral.

Carter will be buried next to his wife, Rosalyn Carter, in the grounds of their longtime home in Plain.

Carter, a Democrat, became president in January 1977 after defeating Republican President Gerald Ford (NYSE: ) in the 1976 election. The one-term president brought some stability to the Middle East with the 1978 Camp David Accords between Israel and Egypt.

After his presidency, Carter devoted a long life to humanitarian work, for which he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. World leaders and former US presidents have paid tribute to a man they praised as compassionate, humble and committed to Middle East peace.
