Lawsuit Blames Cybertruck’s Door Handle Design After a Fatal Crash

Tesla, the parents of two college students who died in a cybertrack accident in the last autumn, alleged that the design of the truck was stuck inside the victims.

Tesla’s signature electronic door handles have already arrived under investigation in recent months. In September, US regulators began an inquiry into the defective door handles in certain Tesla models. The accident happened on the night of November 27, 2024 in the San Francisco suburban Pidmont. Tesla’s cybertrack lacks the traditional exterior door handles. Instead, the doors are open with small electronic buttons near Windows. There is a manual release inside the truck but it is hard to find, especially for passengers in the back. To open the back doors of the truck, the drivers need to pick up a mat in the storage pocket of the door and tug on a cable hidden underneath. Cybertrack stainless steel panel and reinforced armor glass windows, which make rescue operations especially difficult, the cases argue that these design features are guilty of the death of the passengers.

Tesla did not immediately respond to any request for Gizmodo’s comment.

Complaints landed at a time when Tesla’s electrical door handles are already under the regulatory investigation. Just last month, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) launched a preliminary investigation of the failed door handles in Model Wi vehicles of 2021, after receiving several reports of parents who were trapped inside their vehicle. This investigation cover about 175,000 cars and will evaluate whether the error creates a serious security risk.

Bloomberg investigation has shown that Tesla doors have received more than 140 complaints about sticking, opening, or otherwise failing from NHTSA 2018.
