India’s Mahakumbh Mela, the world’s largest religious gathering, entered its second day on Tuesday.

Over the next six weeks, 400 million visitors are expected to visit the festival.

Thousands of religious leaders and pilgrims can be seen plunging into the icy waters in a ritual they believe will cleanse them of sin and help them achieve salvation.

The BBC’s Samira Hussain described the “amazing” spectacle that began in the early hours of the morning.
