It is not expected to find survivors after a major explosion at the Tennessee ammunition factory on Friday, which left 18 people reported.

The recovery teams still stick to the hope of finding one of the missing alives, but we assume that the disappeared have died, said Humphreris Sheriff Chris Davis.

“As we enter this, we find it even more devastating than we thought originally,” he told a press conference.

It is still unclear what caused the explosion at the Bucksrt factory, Tennessee – approximately 56 miles (90 km) southwest of Nashville. The facility is specialized in the development and production of explosives.

More than 300 state and local first responders search the site from Friday morning and have not found survivors, Sheriff Davis said on Saturday.

“The expectation of anyone inside this building … we can assume they have died,” he told the media.

By Saturday morning, the rescue mission was heading for a recovery surgery, said Davis, who is apparently suffocated.

The FBI is also in the place that conducts fast DNA tests to identify victims and notify families.

“We are trying to focus as much attention as possible, to take care of their families,” Sheriff Jason Kraft from neighboring Hikman County told the BBC.

Residents of a city about 15 miles (25 km) could hear the explosion, Sheriff Davis said on Friday.

A local resident who lives about 20 minutes from the facility told the BBC that she was sitting at her daughter’s dining room when she heard it.

“Suddenly we just heard a loud blow. We didn’t know if it was a gun or what,” she said.

Another local resident, Lucy Garton, who has lived nearby for six years, has not heard the explosion itself, but she experienced the consequences as she was on her way to work on Friday.

“When I got home, the roads were just blocked with state soldiers. You had to show proof that you lived here to go,” she said. “There were many ambulances, fire trucks, everything parked at the gas station.”

She said her husband knew people who worked at the facility.

“I think this will definitely affect the area,” she said. “It’s a very close community and everyone, they are just simple people, go to work every day, take care of their families and just a real family -oriented community.”

She said many people in the area were hired at the plant, adding, “I’m sure it will be difficult for them to return to work after such a tragedy.”
