One man dead after shooting and fire in the church of Mormon in Michigan

At least one person is dead and nine others are injured after shooting and a fire at the Mormon church in Michigan, local police say.

Authorities said that in the church of Jesus Christ of Jesus Christ of the saints of the last days in Grand Blanc, a city of 60 miles (96 km) northwest of Detroit, on Sunday morning.

“There are many casualties and the shooter has been taken down,” police said. Authorities have not yet identified suspects or reveal a motive.

The Grand Blank Police Department said there was no more threat to the public and the fire was contained.

US Prosecutor General Pam Bondi said in an X publication that she had received briefings about “What seems to be a terrifying shooting and fire” in the church.

She added that agents with the FBI and the alcohol, tobacco, firearm and explosives were on their way to the scene.

“Such violence on the spot of worship is heartbreaking and freezing,” Bondi said. “Please join me by praying for the victims of this terrible tragedy.”

FBI Director Kash Patel has confirmed in a statement that federal agents are about to help local authorities. He called the incident a “cowardly and criminal act”.

In a separate statement, Michigan Gretchen Gretchen Whitmer said, “Violence everywhere, especially at a worship site, is unacceptable,” adding that she is watching the situation.
