France’s justice minister has admitted security lapses in the defense of the Louvre museum in Paris after thieves stole imperial jewels in broad daylight on Sunday.

Gérald Darmanin said it created a terrible image for France, as the thieves were able to park a truck fitted with a furniture lift in the middle of the city, get people into it within minutes and grab priceless jewellery.

The French government said eight priceless items were stolen, including a diamond and emerald necklace. The Louvre remains closed to the public, although it is scheduled to reopen on Monday.
