Police are investigating the Tesla Cybertruck explosion outside the Trump Hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Police said a cyber truck pulled up outside the hotel Wednesday near a glass entrance, after which the vehicle began to emit smoke and explode.
The driver was killed and seven people were injured, police said, without naming those involved. Authorities said all injuries were minor.
The fire broke out around 0840 PT (1540 GMT), just hours after ten people were killed when a man plowed a truck into a crowd in New Orleans, Louisiana, on New Year’s Day.
Sheriff Kevin McMahill of the Las Vegas Police Department said officers were “well aware of what happened in New Orleans,” referring to the terrorist attack involving improvised explosive devices found near the scene in Louisiana.
“As you can imagine, with an explosion here on an iconic strip in Las Vegas, we are taking all the precautions we need to take to keep our community safe,” he said during a press conference.
Mr McMahill said there was no longer a threat to the Las Vegas community.
Fire officials said emergency crews quickly worked to extinguish the fire inside the vehicle.
They added that the public should stay away from the area and that the hotel had been evacuated, with most guests being relocated.
In a statement posted on X, Tesla CEO Elon Musk said “the entire senior team at Tesla is investigating this matter right now. We will release more information as soon as we learn anything. We have never seen anything like this.”
The hotel is owned in part by President-elect Donald Trump’s company. In a post on X, Trump’s son, Eric Trump, said “an electric vehicle fire has reportedly occurred at the Trump Las Vegas porte cochère.”
“The safety and well-being of our guests and staff remains our top priority. We extend our heartfelt thanks to the Las Vegas Fire Department and local law enforcement for their quick response and professionalism,” he said.
Videos of the incident circulating on social media showed a cybertruck outside the Trump Hotel entrance before bursting into flames.
