Portugal says it will recognize the Palestinian state

Portugal says that on Sunday it will recognize the Palestinian state, which makes the westernst western nation that is preparing to shift politics, since the war in the Gaza Strip shows no signs of suspension.

The Foreign Ministry made the announcement before the General Nations General Assembly next week in New York.

France, the United Kingdom, Canada and Australia are preparing similar messages.

Israel condemned this move, with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said he “rewards the horror” after Hamas’s attack on October 7, 2023 against Israel.

The main ally of the United States – Israel – sounded Netanyahu’s argument.

President Donald Trump, speaking with Prime Minister Sir Kyar Starmer this week, while on a state visit to the UK, said he did not agree with the recognition.

About three quarters of the 193 UN members have already recognized a Palestinian state, which in 2012 received state status to monitor observers.

As world leaders are preparing to gather at the UN General Assembly on Tuesday, Israeli tanks and troops continue to cross the city of Gaza as part of a ground offensive that forced thousands of people to escape.

The Israeli military launched a campaign in Gaza in response to the Hamas attack against South Israel in 2023, which killed about 1,200 people and 251 others were hostage.

At least 65 141 people have been killed in Israeli attacks in Gaza since then, according to the health ministry in the territory.
