The R&B singer awarded Michael Eugene Archer, known to his fans as d’Angelo, died 51 years after a cancer battle, a message to his family said.
His family told him on Tuesday that the singer was leaving behind “an inheritance of extremely moving music” and asked fans to celebrate “the gift of the song he left for the world.”
The influential singer was known for the pioneer of the Neo-Soul genre, which combines R&B music with other genres, including hip-hop and jazz.
His three albums won him four Grammy Awards. The music video of his hit song, without title (how he feels), gained main attention after appearing in the video with a one -time firing, a goal, dressed in the song.
“The radiant star of our family darkens his light for us in this life,” said his statement, received by CBS News, the BBC American partner.
D’Angelo began his career as a songwriter and worked with big names in music like Lauryn Hill and The Roots.
He stood up in the 1990s with his debut album Brown Sugar. His song, Lady, from this album, reached # 10th in the Billboard Hot 100 ranking in 1996.
This song won him numerous Grammy nominations and secured his place on the music scene.
