New year, new Samsung smartphone drop your money. The company has officially announced that it will host Galaxy Unpacked Wednesday, January 22. That would be San Jose, California—my hometown, if you care. We expect Samsung to announce Galaxy S25 seriesFrom petite to ultra. Plus, there’s likely a lot of Galaxy AI in store, as the event teaser makes clear.

You can follow along with Samsung’s keynote here at Gizmodo, where we’ll have news as it hits. Samsung will be streaming the event on it YouTube channel.

What to expect from Samsung’s Galaxy Unpacked

We look forward to seeing what Samsung does next with its flagship series. Apple and Google’s latest releases have been relative hits since their debuts last summer, so the stakes are high. While Samsung was the first to introduce artificial intelligence as a value-add in a premium smartphone, it doesn’t have Google Gemini to piggyback on like last year’s Galaxy S24 release.

The company already told us that the Galaxy S25 series was around the corner in a press release many months ago. But we know nothing of its inner contents or its purpose. We can only assume that it will have the new Qualcomm chip, scaled up for Samsung’s devices. Similar to the trajectory of the Ultra series, there will likely be thinner bezels, a larger display and sharper corners. Some rumors say that the Galaxy S25 in the factory line resembles the iPhone, from which Samsung has spent years differentiating itself. Interestingly enough, so does the Google Pixel 9 lineup. Is everyone in Android land going in this direction? As for other models, a smaller Galaxy S25 is expected to match the screen size of Apple and Google’s lineup. A smaller display can mean an easily portable device with all the products of its larger flagship brothers.

Now that we have an official date, the rumors will probably start to grow. Samsung is still relying heavily on artificial intelligence to drive the excitement. The teaser video released alongside the Galaxy Unpacked announcement begins with someone waking up and asking a digital assistant to put “Galaxy Unpacked” on a calendar. Samsung needs to prove to its users that Galaxy AI is not just a gimmick, the way Bixby fell upon us after failing to deliver on par with Google Assistant.

If you’re the kind of Samsung fan who can pre-order a device without knowing what’s next, the company hopes to entice you with a $50 credit on a reserve between now and the January 22 launch day. Samsung offers up to $900 in credit on trade-ins, so think about the gadgets in your arsenal that can help keep costs down. Last year’s Galaxy S24 devices ranged in price from $800 to $1,300 for the Galaxy S24 Ultra. With all the tariffs and rising costs it could be priced in the same range or higher this year.
