The Gaza people responded with shock after US President Donald Trump welcomed Hamas’s response to his peaceful plan for the territory.
Hundreds of Palestinians flooded my social media accounts and messages for questions such as: “Was the war finished?” And “Is this dream or reality?”
The pace of development at night left many to struggle to understand what was next.
The carefully developed statement of the movement – it is believed that it was made with the help of mediators – stopped rejecting the rejection and instead proposed a qualified “yes”.
Hamas accepted Trump’s conditions for the release of Israeli hostages and the idea of handing over the management of the Gaza to the Palestinian Technocrats – but did not give a clear answer to many other elements of his proposal of 20 pointsS
Many Palestinians are said to be a calculated answer that returned the ball to Israel’s court.
Shortly after its publication, Trump wrote on social media that he believed Hamas was ready for peace and called on Israel to stop the bombing of Gaza.
The reactions among the Palestinians in the territory varied from hope to deep suspicion.
Some are afraid that Hamas has trapped and this Israel will restore his hostages just to resume the war. Others believe it is an open historical opportunity that will end two years of conflict.
“I advise patience,” Ibrahim Farez told the BBC.
“Don’t get involved in optimism. There will be circles of talk about the details. The devil is always in the workpiece,” he said. “Look at Lebanon, where even now there are still displaced people and air strikes.”
Mahmoud Dahar noted on Facebook that Hamas’s answer was unusual for his directness.
“This time it was without the usual,” but “immediately after that,” he writes.
“Yes, the release of the prisoners under the Trump formula, yes, to end the war and the withdrawal, yes, to pass the power to the Palestinian authority. The cheeks came only later. Hamas even a game of Trump’s ego with praise.”
But not everyone is convinced.
Gaza -based activist and longtime Hamas critic Halil Abu Shmala said the solution was to survive the movement.
“They will call this wisdom – or they will put people first. But the truth is that it is that Hamas remains in power. I even doubt Hamas wrote the statement – it was too smart.”
So far, the Palestinians remain uncertain as they wait to see if the words on paper can really be enough to end the war.
