Skeleton Crew Finally Gave Us a Great Star Wars Villain Turn

Well, in the last episode of the series, “We’re in Big Trouble,” Zod finally showed his true colors and we loved it.

After a very entertaining sequence of parents trying to get a message from Atteen, which included many, many of those iconic circulars. Star Wars Stunned blast, we finally picked up the crew on their way home. Unfortunately for them though, Brutus and his pirates arrive first. There, they tell Zod that if he doesn’t finally deliver their treasure, he’s dead.

Unable to break through the terrifying and deadly barrier that surrounds the planet, Zod comes up with a plan. The children come Between new and improved Onyx cinderSo Zod tells the pirates that the ship is the key to the planet. They grab it and try to ride it. You’d assume the kids would just surrender, but these aren’t the same kids that left the planet. They have changed. They are more capable. And with a little trickery, they manage to capture the pirate leader Brutus, scaring the rest of his followers. A man is not afraid though. Emphasize that. And in the most surprising and brutal moment of the entire series so far, Zod shoots a helpless, defenseless Brutus in the head with a blaster, reclaiming his pirate crew for himself.

The kids get that message from their parents as Jod decides what to do next. This gives them new hope and, with a little help from SM-33, they manage to escape the pirates and fly through the barrier. They are home free, or so they think. But no: Zod sneaks away and soon takes control of the ship, using the lightsaber in Tuck Renaud’s vault to cut off 33’s head. He then threatens the children with a slow, painful death if they don’t shut up and let him do his thing. That, combined with the elimination of Brutus, finally turns on the switch for Zod. He is in this for himself. He is not a hero. He is an evil, smelly, murderous pirate.

Which is kind of amazing, right? Assuming it sticks through the final episode, we love that the show’s big bad is staring us in the face from the very beginning. Zod was never a full hero, but he did heroic things to help the kids as well as himself. And yet, the fact that he always had all these aliases and a latent power ability made him extra cagey and powerful. We kind of hoped he was a good guy, but it’s much more satisfying for the show that he won’t be. At least, not yet. This gives the kids a real threat to (hopefully) defeat.

perception Onyx cinder It’s actually from Atene, its arrival allows a whole new protocol to come into play. The planet’s higher ups don’t know that Zod is a pirate bringing in missing children. They believe him to be a Republic emissary arriving with a shipment of gold. Which is a little more convenient for us, the viewers, but works perfectly for Zod. He dives right into a huge, impressive series of vaults (1,139 in fact) filled with Old Republic credits. This is the treasure that he and every pirate has always dreamed of. And he found it. He is a legend.

At this point, the families are informed that the children are back and they are reunited. It’s a touching moment but is quickly interrupted by Zod, who pulls out his lightsaber to let them know he’s still in charge. “We’re in Big Trouble” finally got the skeleton crew back to Atene, finally revealed Zod as the true villain we hoped he wasn’t, and pulled back the curtain a bit on the planet’s truth. It is literally filled with gold. Why? In the end what? And how will the crew save the day? One more episode to find out.
