Watch: The South Korean President tells the BBC that it will accept a Trump-Kim deal for freezing nuclear program

South Korea President has said he will accept a deal between Donald Trump and Kim Jong Un, under which North Korea will agree to freeze the production of his nuclear weapons so far, instead of getting rid of them.

Lee Jj Mun said BBC in North Korea was producing an additional 15-20 nuclear weapons a year and freezing – as an “intermediate emergency” – it would be a “feasible, realistic alternative”.

North Korea declared itself nuclear energy in 2022 and swore to never give up its weapons.

Previous negotiation attempts have failed, and since then Pyongyang has rejected all invitations to return to the conversations.

“Until we give up the long -term purpose of denuclearization, I believe it has clear benefits from North Korea to stop his nuclear and rocket development,” said Lee Jj Mun.

“The question is whether we continue to be reserved with fruitless attempts at the ultimate goal (for denuclearization) or set ourselves more realistic goals and achieve some of them,” Lee added.

President Lee, who came to office in June, wants to establish a peaceful relationship with North Korea and reduce the tensions blazing under his predecessor, John Suk Youol, who was impeach that he was trying to make a martial law last year.

The South Korean leader is vowel to Wanting President Trump to resume nuclear conversations with Kimwhich fell apart in 2019 during Trump’s first term after the United States asked the North to disassemble its nuclear facilities.

Lee told the BBC that he thinks it is possible for the couple to come back together, given that they “seem to have a degree of mutual trust.” This can be beneficial to South Korea and contribute to global peace and security, he added.

The BBC sat with South Korea President at his office in Seoul before his trip to the United Nations General Assembly in New York on Monday.

South Korea is currently holding the UN Security Council presidency, but Lee would not be attracted whether the body has failed in South Korea, as China and Russia have been blocking attempts to impose a more sanction on the north over its nuclear program for years.

“Although it is clear that the UN is reduced when it comes to creating a really calm world, I still believe that it performs many important functions,” Lee said, adding that the reform of the Security Council is “not very realistic.”

Asked if China now allows North Korea’s nuclear weapons, Lee said it was “impossible to know”, but on the basis of his current knowledge, this is not his understanding.

Earlier this month, Chinese President Xi Jinping welcomed Kim to Beijing Military Parade along with Russian Vladimir Putin and, unlike past meetings, China did not mention publicly The Nuclear weapons or denuclearization in the northS

Observing links between Beijing, Moscow and Pyongyang, on the display of China’s parade, put South Korea in a “very difficult situation,” Lee said.

“Seeing China, Russia and North Korea become so close, it is obviously not desirable for us,” he said, adding that he would probably answer, continuing to work closely with the US and Japan.

Historically, South Korea balances its US relations – its military ally – and China – which relies on much of its trade – but this channel becomes more difficult to walk.

Lee recently said he would stand with the United States in the New World Order, which appears, but speaking to him, it is clear that he wants to avoid doing enemies in the process.

This once left leaders, according to opposition leader, is now presenting himself as a centrist. He chooses his words and positions carefully as he tries to skillfully navigate South Korea in a shifting world.

“The world is divided into two camps, and South Korea is positioned right on the border,” he said, marking “the truly uncertain location of his country” to China and Russia.

“This situation is becoming more difficult. But these camps cannot completely close their doors, so we can position ourselves somewhere in the middle.”

Lee was even careful not to throw a future relationship with Russia, which built a military partnership with North Korea during the war in Ukraine – sending her food, oil and huge sums of money in exchange for weapons and troops.

“It is clear that the invasion of Russia in Ukraine must be condemned and the war must end as soon as possible,” he said.

“But relations between the parties are not clear and we find ways to cooperate when possible and to strive to exist calmly.”

Presidents Lee and Trump met in the White House in late August

His attention is understandable. The dangers of reading too much in the United States have never been more clear, with friends of America and enemies being caught in Trump’s continuing trade war.

Lee successfully managed to Reduce South Korea Tariffs to 15%And during a recent trip to the White House, he seems to be fascinating the president.

But then, two weeks ago, US immigration officials detained hundreds of Korean workers who built a Georgia car battery factory – part of South Korea’s engagement to move production in the United States while investing hundreds of billions of dollars there. The Lee government has been able to ensure the release of workers a week later.

“As a president, I have a deep sense of responsibility for the harsh treatment that our citizens endured,” he said, describing the incident as “shocking.” Korean companies are likely to be “more collecting to invest in the US,” he added.

But Lee said he believed he could use the incident to strengthen Seoul’s relationship with Washington.

“There is a Korean saying that says,” After the rain, the earth hardens. “

Lee won a decisive term in June, six months after the failures of his predecessor of his predecessor

At home, Lee chaired a polarized country, shaken by months of political turmoil after his previous president tried to organize a military absorption. Ion, who is now faced with prison life, has set the tension with North Korea.

He tried to justify his unsuccessful experience in martial law, claiming that the country’s institutions had penetrated Pyongyang supporters.

Now Lee says he is trying to do everything he can to fix confidence with the North. After entering office, he stopped the government in Seoul from Transmission of radio broadcasts in North KoreaS

These broadcasts were known to the wrath of Kim Jong Un, but were one of the few ways in which North Korean people who are increasingly isolated can receive information outside the country. This move was criticized by human rights organizations.

“We consider that (these broadcasts) has almost no practical effect,” Lee said when he was asked to justify his decision. He claims that any benefits are not sufficient to exceed the price of the antagonization of the regime.

“The important thing is the restoration of confidence between the north and the south, especially since the last government to North Korea was so hostile. We believe that these measures will help you get North Korea to return to the conversations.”

So far, the North has rejected Lee’s reputation gestures, calling him “deluded” and “dreamer.”

But Lee is not naive. He knows that Donald Trump is his most likely path to peace on the peninsula and that this time he should be re -appointed.

He is hot to present as a pragmatist, he understands, unlike the others before him, that North Korea’s nuclear weapons cannot be agreed outside the existence – at least not for now.
