PA mediaSir Kiir Starmer is expected to announce the recognition of the United Kingdom of the Palestinian State in a statement on Sunday afternoon.
The prime minister said in July that the United Kingdom’s position would be displaced in September, unless Israel fulfilled several conditions, including agreeing to the cessation of fire in Gaza and to commit to a long -term peace process that would lead to a decision of two countries.
The United Kingdom has long summoned an agreement that will see a Palestinian state that exists with Israel – something that the Israeli leadership has abandoned since the beginning of its war with the Palestinian armed group Hamas.
The prime minister’s move has caused fierce criticism by the Israeli government, hostage families held in Gaza and some conservatives.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had previously said he was “awarding terror.”
The decision to recognize the Palestinian state is a major change in the foreign policy of the United Kingdom after consistent governments said that recognition should come as part of the peace process and in time of maximum impact.
However, ministers claim that there was a moral responsibility to act to maintain the hopes of long -term peace alive.
Efforts to ensure that the fire in Gaza – let alone a long -term decision of the Israeli -Palestinian conflict – have fallen apart. Israel recently provoked international outrage when it He made an air strike on a Hamas Negotiation Team In Qatar.
Government sources have said that the situation on the spot has also deteriorated significantly over the last few weeks. They quoted images showing hunger and violence in Gaza, which Sir Keyer earlier as “impatient”.
Israel’s last ground operation in Gaza, Described by a UN employee as “cataclysmic”, he forced hundreds of thousands of people to escape.
This is the latest Israeli offensive in the almost two-year war, which began with an attack led by Hamas against southern Israel-in which about 1,200 people were killed and 251 hostages taken back to Gaza-and saw a large part of 65,208 people who have moved.
Earlier this week, a The United Nations Investigation Commission concluded that Israel had committed genocide Against the Palestinians in Gaza, which Israel condemned as “distorted and incorrect.”
Ministers also emphasized the continued expansion of the Israeli settlements on the occupied West coast, which are illegal under international law as a key factor in the decision to recognize Palestinian statehood.
Justice Minister David Lamie, who was an external secretary, when she was proposed recognition, cited the controversial E1 settlement project – which critics warn, would end the hope of a viable, neighboring Palestinian state – as well as violence from Israeli settlers on the west coast.
Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas welcomed the promise to recognize the United Kingdom when he visited Sir Keyer earlier this month, with Daung Street saying that both leaders have agreed that Hamas should not play a role in Palestine’s future government.
Conservative leader Kemi Badenich said he wanted to see a decision of two countries in the Middle East.
But she wrote in Telegraph over the weekend: “It is obvious and the US is clear that the recognition of a Palestinian state at that time and without the release of the hostages would be a reward for terrorism.”
In the meantime, in an open letter to Sir Keyer on Saturday, family members of some of the hostages taken from Hamas called on the Prime Minister not to take the step until the 48 still in Gaza, 20 of which are still alive, have not been returned.
The announcement of the upcoming recognition had “dramatically complicated efforts to bring home loved ones,” they wrote. “Hamas is already celebrating the UK’s decision as a victory and renewed in a transaction to end the fire.”
Government sources have said ministers will expose the next steps to penalize Hamas in the coming weeks.
During a state visit to the United Kingdom this week, US President Donald Trump also said he did not agree with the recognition.
Sir Cayer had set a deadline at the UN General Assembly meeting, Which is being held this week so that Israel can take “essential steps to end the horrific situation in Gaza, to agree to the cessation of the fire and to engage in a long -term, sustainable peace, reviving the perspective of the decision of two countries.”
He said in July: “With this decision is now under threat, this is the moment of action.”
A number of other countries including Portugal, FranceCanada and Australia They also said they would recognize the Palestinian state while Spain, Ireland and Norway took the step last year.
Palestine is currently recognized by about 75% of the 193 UN Member States, but there are no internationally coordinated boundaries, no capital and no army -to make a large extent symbolic.
The bilateral decision refers to the creation of a Palestinian state on the West Coast and the Gaza Strip, with East Jerusalem being its capital. Currently, Israel occupies both the West Bank and Gaza, which means that Palestinian power is not in complete control over its land or humans.
The recognition of the Palestinian state has long been a cause, supported by many within the Labor Party. The prime minister is under increasing pressure to take a tougher position for Israel, especially from MPs to the left of his party.
Shortly before he spent his speech in July, more than half of the Labor MPs signed a letter calling on the government to immediately recognize a Palestinian state.
EPACritics, however, called out why the government seems to have put the conditions for Israel, but not Hamas.
The UK’s chief rabbi, Sir Efrem Mirvis, has called on the government to suspend its decision.
“The acknowledgment provided does not depend on a functioning or democratic Palestinian government, or even the most basic commitment to a peaceful future,” he said.
“Amazing, it is not even conditional when the 48 hostages remain in captivity.
Government sources insisted that their demands for Hamas would release the hostages and agree to the cessation of the fire did not change.
But employees at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs claim that statehood is the right to the Palestinian people and cannot be dependent on Hamas, which the government considers to be a terrorist organization.
