A Sudanese police leader has been found guilty of committing war crimes and crimes against humanity more than 20 years ago in the Darfur region.

Ali Mohammed Ali Abd-Al-Rahman, also known as Ali Kushab, leads Janjaweed, supported by the government, a group that terrorizes Darfur, killing hundreds of thousands of people.

Kusheb is the first person tried by the International Criminal Court (ICC) for the atrocities in Darfur. He claims that this is a case of a wrong identity.

The conflict continued from 2003 to 2020 and was one of the most serious humanitarian disasters in the world.

During the process, the survivors describe how their villages are burned, men and boys kill themselves, and women are forced to sexual slavery.

Kushai’s sentence is related to attacks between 2003 and 2004.

Judges from the ICC have discovered Janjaid’s brutal tactics – including mass executions, sexual abuse and torture – were often applied by Kushai and his people.

Before the sentence, a small group of Darfuris waited patiently to enter the Hague Dutch city.

They had no doubt about the main role that Kusab played in his suffering, as one man said: “He was the one who gave the commandments. He was the one who received the weapons.

“So if you ask me if he is important in Darfur, I will tell you that he was one of the most important.”

The war in Darfur began after the Arab government dominated at a time when he armed Janjaweed, in an attempt to suppress a rebellion of black African ethnic groups.

Janjaweed systematically attacks the Nearabian peasants accused of supporting rebels, leading to accusations of genocide.

The same systemic violence is still happening in Darfur as part of Sudan’s civil war.

Many Janjaweed fighters have become a fast support forces (RSF), the paramilitary group currently fighting the Sudan army.

The United Kingdom, the United States and the Right Groups accused RSF of ethnic cleansing against Nearabian communities in Darfur, as the conflict began in 2023.
