There are two kinds of great television shows: the kind that millions watch and talk about, and the kind that never quite break into the larger cultural conversation. As for the latter, it’s not for lack of merit. It’s true that not every great TV series finds its fandom.
So you’d be forgiven for one of—if not all—the best series to premiere last year. After all, with countless networks looking to get into the original content game in various formats (broadcast, cable, streaming and otherwise), there are plenty of TVs to choose from. Some of these are worse than others; some of it a lot Fortunately, we’ve done the heavy lifting and taken the guesswork out of it for you. Here’s our pick for the best TV shows you might have missed in 2024.
After the flood
what you think After the flood Well, you’re probably wrong—or at least missing a big part of the series’ appeal. After a flash flood that leaves much of the Yorkshire town’s waterfront under water, police officer Joe Marshall (Peaky BlindersSophie Rundle) is called to a parking garage, where a man’s body may be trapped in an elevator, possibly drowned. But when the authorities learn that the unidentified man was killed three days before the flood, Joe will do whatever it takes to name the body at the morgue. When he makes the very bad decision to enter his DNA into an ancestry database, he learns that the man who was definitely breathing just 72 hours ago has been dead for years. For Zoe, who just weeks after giving birth, it’s a race to find the killer before motherhood arrives. And, in doing so, discovers that everyone—not even those closest to him—is not who or what they say they are. Good news for those who watch it: After the flood has already been renewed for a second season.

Peter Capaldi plays against type as Daniel Hegarty, a seasoned detective at the end of an impressive career whose legacy may be on the line. When an anonymous tipster provides some startling information that casts doubt on the verdict in a high-profile, decades-old case that Hagerty worked on, he’d rather imagine he got it right the first time. Detective June Lenker (Cush Jumbo) who was not trusted receives the same information and retraces Hegarty’s steps, putting the two at odds. The ever charming Capaldi has found an excellent sparring partner in Jumbo. The second season is currently in the works.
Diarra from Detroit
Diarra Brickland (Diarra Kilpatrick) is a teacher coming out of a painful divorce who finally thinks she might be ready to re-enter the dating scene – or at least have a little fun on Tinder. What she doesn’t expect to find is Chris (Shannon Wallace), a man with serious soul potential. When she stops hearing from him completely after a glorious night together, Diara insists that he must be missing, because there’s no way he’s ghosting her… right? Her closest friends are skeptical, but Diara goes all out to find her man and soon finds herself embroiled in Detroit’s extremely dangerous criminal underworld. Did we mention that this is a comedy? Kilpatrick is a force of nature in this BET+ series, which he created and produced (alongside Kenya Barris).
Lost Boys and Fairies
We know that Rotten Tomatoes’ Tomatometer isn’t the final word on quality. But it says something The Lost Boy and the Fairy Has a perfect 100 percent score (based on only half a dozen critics’ reviews, but still). After nearly a decade together, Gabriel (Sion Daniel Yang) and Andy (Phra Phi) decide they’re ready to take the leap into parenthood. But as they begin the formal adoption process, Gabe—whose own childhood was marked by trauma from the death of his mother and a rift with his gay father—wonders whether he may or may not be worthy of being a loving parent. . It’s a powerful, poignant reminder that bonds can break us.

Although both sisters are confused as to what their mother was doing on the island in the first place, they soon learn about the many buried chapters in their mother’s history that brought her to this place. Jones (Gentleman Jack) and best (House of the Dragon) is never good when it’s just the two of them, being sisters, for better or worse.
Mr. Spade
Clive Wayne joins a long list of powerful actors from Humphrey Bogart to Tom Wilkinson to inhabit the role of Sam Spade-Dashiel Hammett’s famous private detective. Sadly, eight episodes is all we’re going to get from the series, as Amazon has announced its cancellation after just one great season.
Lamp of Pittsburgh
is lost Star Naveen Andrews gets to use her stellar comedic chops in this darkly humorous tale of the American Dream gone wrong. When a great business opportunity seems to arise, Pradeep family patriarch Mahesh (Andrews) moves his family from India to America, where culture shock is the least of their problems. When we meet the family, they’ve been living in Pittsburgh for two years—and are telling their story to a pair of federal agents (Pete Holmes and Romy Rosemont) from the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service, as they are to their presumably snobby neighbors (Megan Hilty and Ethan Supley). House burning is suspected. The most surprising part is that the story is partially based on the real life of the creator Vijal Patel.
sugar
Colin Farrell has had a good year on the small screen, especially with success Penguin. But five months before Oz reprises his role as Cobb, the Oscar-nominated actor has become a neo-noir. sugar. The stylish crime-drama stars Farrell as John Sugar, a private detective who is hired to investigate the disappearance of the granddaughter of a major Hollywood producer while battling some personal demons of his own. If you’ve heard anything about the show, you probably know there’s a twist (more than one of them, really). A second season has already been confirmed.
Renegade Nell
Sally Wainwright has never been known as a creator of “family-friendly” fare—unless your kids think that’s double-watching. Happy Valley An all ages affair. But there is a creative force behind it Renegade Nell You can tell even once you watch the first episode. After being accused of murder, Nell Jackson (Louisa Harland) becomes one of England’s most feared highwaymen. It’s definitely a bluff, but Nell realizes that the best way to clear her name is to lean into the notoriety around her and have a little fun with it. Harland is a joy to watch (even when you know there’s no Season 2 on the menu).
