NetflixMagi Kang, the creator and conquered KPOP Demon Lunters, said she was “excited about the potential for more stories”, including the Girl Group Hunt Animation Group/x.
Speaking to the BBC during a visit to Europe, Kang explained that although there was “nothing official we can talk about,” she and the co-director Chris Apelhans believe that “we can definitely do with these characters in this world.”
“And whatever it is, it will be a story that deserves to be a sequel and it will be something we want to see,” she added.
Kpop Demon Hunters has become a cultural phenomenon this year, Ahead of the squid game As the most watched title in Netflix history, with more than 325 million views.
GhettoesThe animated movie tells the story of an extremely successful women’s trio KPOP, which plays huge concerts at the same time as he tries to save the world from evil forces.
They end locked in a battle against a boy group called Saja Boys, which are made up of demons.
The movie has broken a record after recording. The singing version, published in theaters in August, became the first Netflix movie in history to head the American box office.
His music also topped the charts of American singles and albums, becoming the first soundtrack in history, which has four songs at the same time in the top 10 of the United States, something that can’t even achieve a fever Saturday night.
The golden anthem of the movie, sung by Huntr/X, spent eight weeks under number one, binding sugar sugar from the archives for the most time at the top of the charts of an animated act.
There is now a real conviction that KPOP demons may be set up to kill the Oscars.
Critics have loved the movie that results in 95% Rotten Tomatoes approval assessmentThe online review aggregator.
The Golden Derby’s Impact Website now has it as The favorite for the best cartoonBefore Zootopia 2 and Elio.
“Only the title is obviously an Oscar lure,” laughs Chris Apelhans, the American, who is the other half of the director’s duet.
“We tried to do something new and it was really difficult and I think we were really proud of how it came out. But if people would reward it, it would be great.”
The other category in which the movie should be a strong Challenger is the best original song, where the rules indicate that each movie can only introduce three numbers.
NetflixNetflix has already stated that the Golden breakthrough will be included to view the Academy, but what about the other two slots?
“I think your idol is such a bang,” says Kang about the song that the said boys sing as they feed the souls of their audience on the evil Overlord Gwi-Ma.
“We are so proud of the song, but also to the sequence. We cheered, we were so proud of it.”
However, Appelhans is Team Huntr/X, choosing how it sounds.
“The finale was such a technical challenge as in writing songs and in storytelling,” he explains. “To make a song that was the culmination of your movie, with many moving parts, but it was also a real catharsic song.”
Kang agrees, “This is a song that every time I hear it, I just cry. It’s very emotional.”
“There is no room for pop?” I ask about Saja Boys’ ears.
“Maybe we could take four?” Laughs Kang.
“We’ll just send everyone then,” joins the Appelhans.
Appelhans can attach the right moment back in June when he realized there was a blow to his hands.
“It is literally 2 in the morning on the night after the movie was released. I’m on a tyktok and in the comment section they perfectly articulate Rumi’s emotional journey.”
He was glad that fans were already committed to the main character of the film, deeply.
Kang, who was born in South Korea and moved to Canada at the age of five, puts the breakthrough, as a little later. “We were able to contact our main audience, which is the KPOP audience and the animation fans, and this demographic information took our movie very quickly.
“But it was the third week when the trajectory of the view graphics really changed. We were like:” Wow. That was weird. “
“And we could see through our social media all the different pockets of demographic that connected with it.”
Kang believes that fans were crucial in all the fascinating rise of the movie: “They are an age group that loves to make content. And it was something like a free advertisement. They just spread the word of this movie everywhere. I think it helped him develop these long legs.”
The success of the film continues to grow. Four months after its release, it was still the most watched movie in 19 countries last week, including the United Kingdom and the United States.
The stars of Kpop Rei Ami, Audrey Nuna and Ejay, which provide singing voices for Huntr/X, also appear in Saturday Night Live (in Skit with Bad Bunny) and gave their first Golden performance on Golden In Jimmy Fallon’s American Chat ShowS
“We were so destroyed that we were unable to be there in Falon,” Kang says at a rare moment of inactive positivity.
“We slept in Paris. Just to see him talking to our girls was so strange. Now he feels more real than ever. I’m just so proud of them.
Todd Owyoung/NBC via Getty ImagesOne thing that the couple would like to clear is that they do not believe that their film should be classified as anime.
“I don’t think we’re big enough anime fans to be inspired by it,” Kang explains.
“Anime we like are a very old school, like Cowboy Bebop and Sailor Moon, mentioning two Japanese television shows that originated in the 90s.
Apelhans agrees: “I think it was a scent. I think we were influenced by many Korean movie makers and K-drama. It was part of a wide range of tones we wanted to hit, but not the dominant.”
They are also in a hurry to exclude the adaptation rumors of KPOP Demon Hunters Action Action.
Kang wants to bring this idea into the underworld: “There are so many elements of tone and comedy that are so suitable for animation,” she says.
“It’s really hard to imagine these characters in a live world. It will feel too grounded. So it won’t work for me completely.”
For Appelhans, this is an unscrupulous idea: “One of the great things in animation is that you do these composites of impossible great qualities. Rumi can be this disgusting comedian and then sing and make a rotating back a second later and then release through the sky.
“The joy of animation is how far you can push and raise what is possible. I remember that they adapted very different anime and often times, it just feels a little packed.”
Ricky Midlesworth/ NetflixNo matter what happens this season at the awards, Kang says that their expectations for the movie have already been more than exceeding.
She suggests that the goal is to “connect people and bring them to kpop.”
“Only the vision of people related to this movie was so wonderful,” she reasoned.
“So all the awards would be great, but I think we feel really amazing about what the movie has already done. So there is a feeling that we have won some way.”
