American immigration and customs law enforcement (ICE) shot and killed a man near Chicago on Friday after he supposedly driving his car in a group of agents.

A spokesman for the Ministry of Interior Security said Ice was trying to arrest the man, but he resisted and headed for the group. Agent was then dragged with his vehicle.

The agent, whom the department said he was afraid of his life, pulled out his gun and opened fire.

Driver Silverrio Wilegas-Gonzalez was declared dead in hospital shortly thereafter, officers said.

“During the suspension of the vehicle, the suspect resisted and tried to put his vehicle into the arrest team by hitting an officer and subsequently dragged it when he escaped from the scene,” a statement said.

The ice agent had suffered “serious injuries” in the incident, employees said, but were in stable hospital.

The Ministry of Interior Security said that Mr. Wilegas-Gonzalez had a history of reckless driving and was an underdeveloped migrant. He entered the country “on an unknown date and time,” they said.

A spokesman for the local police department in Franklin Park said they did not participate in the incident.

Illinois governor JB Pritzker wrote in an online publication: “This is a developing situation, and the Illinois people deserve a complete, actual reporting of what has happened today to ensure transparency and accountability.”

Franklin Park is a suburb of about 18,000 people near O’Hare Airport northwest of Chicago. About half of its population is Spanish.

Immigration officers are invading implementation activities in the Chicago area this week at the behest of the Trump Administration.
