At least three people were killed and 20 other wounded after the famous Gloria Cable Railway Railway line of Lisbon derailed and crashed, emergency services said.

The head of the Portugal Civil Protection Authority said several people remained trapped at the scene and two people were in serious condition.

Shots, widely shared on social media, have shown that the yellow funicular has overturned and almost completely destroyed. People could see each other running away from the area as it seemed that smoke was filling the air.

The President’s President of Portugal has issued a statement expressed his “sympathy and solidarity with the families affected by this tragedy.”

Of course, 43 people were on board during the crash that happened near Avenida Da Liberdade around 18:05 on Wednesday night.

It is known whether the killed are Portuguese citizens or foreigners.

The Portuguese Observador newspaper has announced that the cable is loosened along the railway route, leading to a loss of control and collided with a building nearby.

On the spot, sixty -two employees of the official services and 22 vehicles, according to the Civil Protection website.

Gloria Funicular is one of the most famous landmarks and tourist attractions in Lisbon. It was discovered in 1885 and electrified three decades later.

The emblematic yellow trams are a decisive part of a hilly, like Lisbon. They snake on many of the cobblestone streets.

This particular tram, which crashes, travels about 275 m (900 feet) of restaurants, a square in the middle of Lisbon, to the picturesque, cobblestone streets of an area called Bairo Alto – or a high neighborhood – only three minutes to make the trip.

He and the other funiculars are used by the residents of Lisbon, but they are also extremely popular with tourists – and in late summer the Portuguese capital is really very busy.

Authorities in Lisbon say it is too early to determine the cause of this incident – and how many people have been caught in it.
