Three people were killed and several others were injured after Sagittarius opened fire from a boat at a crowded bar on the shore in Sapoport, North Carolina, officials say.

The attack happened on Saturday night in front of the American Fish Company in the Saport Yacht pool.

City spokesman Chian Ketchum said the boat was drawn to the harbor around 9:30 pm local time (01:30 GMT) before the striker opened fire. The attacker then escaped by boat to the internal coastal waterway.

The officials said a suspect, coinciding with the description, was arrested half an hour later by the US coastal security of the nearby Oak island, about 12 miles (19 km) west of the scene.

The identity of the suspect is not released by the police.

The head of the police in Southport Todd Corring described the incident as a “very tragic night” for the community.

The city is home to just under 4000 people. “We are a small community, one of the communities in which everyone knows everyone,” said the Chief Corting.

He said six people were now being injured in hospital. The deceased is not identified by the police.

The incident encouraged Southport officials to issue a statement that urges people to stay in their homes while an active investigation of Sagittarius continues.

“It is convenient for me to say that we do not feel that there are additional threats to the community,” said Chief Corring afterwards.
