It’s still unclear whether TikTok will still be available in US app stores on Sunday, with the company claiming it needs “specific” assurances from the outgoing administration of President Joe Biden that it won’t implement the ban.
Friday, Supreme Court upheld a law This would effectively ban TikTok in the US unless ByteDance, the app’s owner, sells it. With sales unlikely within two days of the law taking effect, TikTok looks set to disappear from the App Store on Sunday, January 19.
It is, however, a day before the election of the president, Donald Trump and the incoming president asked the Supreme Court to delay the ban so he could “negotiate a resolution to save the platform.” While the court did not agree to the delay, the Biden administration also seemed eager to leave the fate of TikTok in Trump’s hands.
in In a statement on Friday, White House Press Secretary Karin Jean-Pierre said that though Biden’s position hasn’t changed — namely, “TikTok should remain available to Americans, but only under American ownership or other ownership that addresses national security concerns identified by Congress.” However, given time, Jean-Pierre said, “steps to implement the law will simply fall to the next administration.”
Similarly, A statement from the Department of Justice Deputy Attorney General Lisa Monaco advised that “the next phase of this effort — enforcing and ensuring compliance with the law after it takes effect on Jan. 19 — will be a process that will play out over time.”
TikTok, however, Respond with a statement of his own suggesting that this is not enough for the company and the App Store to continue offering the TikTok app. In TikTok’s view, Biden and the DOJ “failed to provide necessary clarity and assurance to service providers integral to maintaining TikTok’s availability to 170 million Americans.”
The company added, “Unless the Biden administration immediately issues a definitive statement to satisfy the most important service providers assuring non-enforcement, TikTok will unfortunately be forced to go dark on January 19.”
