US President Donald Trump, annexed to the Republican governor of Tennessee Bill Lee, set up a working group on Monday to take over crime in Memphis, Tennessee.
The Democrats -led city is the second to face the Trump administration against crime after Washington.
Trump swore to “repair” the city after Rafa plans for such an operation in Chicago, according to reports, due to opposition to local and civil servants.
Memphis Mayor Paul Young also expressed opposition to the plan, arguing that crime is already falling without federal intervention.
However, the president said on Monday that Memphis was “overcome” with destruction, robbery and shooting, as well as other crimes.
“We will not allow this type of savage to destroy our society already,” Trump said in signing a memorandum in the oval office.
“We will take care of all of them step by step, just as we did in DC. At the moment we have no crime in DC and keep it that way,” he said, noting that he still has his views of Chicago and St. Louis, Missouri.
The Working Group in Memphis will be a “Effort Replica” in Washington, Trump said, adding that it would activate federal agencies, including the National Guard, FBI, Immigration and Application of Customs and Alcohol, Firearm and Explosives Bureau (ATP) and the Ministry of Justice.
Lee praised his efforts to “sustainable crime reduction” in the country.
In an interview with CNN on Saturday, Young said he was not “happy” by the federal plans to unleash the National Guard in Memphis – he said his plan was confirmed for the first time by Trump on Fox News the previous day.
“My goal is to make sure that if they really come, we have the opportunity to manage some of the decisions about how they participate in our community,” he said.
“This is something we have no choice,” he added. “We will do our best to make sure it has a limited impact on our communities.”
Republican legislators in the state – including governor Lee – expressed support.
The governor said last week that he is already working on a plan with the White House, which will bring “the full degree of both federal and state resources” in Memphis.
The FBI statistics of 2024 shows that Memphis has 2.501 violence crimes per 100,000 people, one of the highest percentages of any city in the United States.
The proclamation comes after weeks of speculation about where the federal resources to fight crime can unleash.
In addition to Chicago, the president mentioned New Orleans – greeted by Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry – and Baltimore.
On August 11, Trump took over the management of the Washington Police Department, and also activated units of the National Guard and a leap of federal law enforcement officers began.
Since then, over 2000 arrests have been carried out and hundreds of illegal firearms since then, which the administration employees have repeatedly stated that they have signed that their strategy in the city is working.
However, polls show that the deployment of troops on the National Guard in the city is unpopular among many locals and legal experts question the legality of using troops in the US cities.
In September, a federal judge in California ruled that the deployment of Trump’s troops to suppress the unrest in Los Angeles is illegal this summer, although the decision is not applied to other cities.
