(Reuters) – U.S. President-elect Donald Trump on Wednesday nominated Miami-Dade County Commissioner Kevin Marino Cabrera to be ambassador to Panama.
Trump described Cabrera as “a staunch fighter for America First principles” as he said he had played an important role in promoting economic growth and strengthening international partnerships.
“Few understand Latin American politics and Kevin – he will do a fantastic job representing our country’s interests in Panama!” He said in a post on Truth Social.
Trump, whose choice of ambassador was announced in 2010 After they threatened to reassert US control of the Panama Canal, which they managed for decades before it was handed over to Panama in 1999.
Trump said the Central American country, with which the US has had diplomatic relations since 1903, is “tearing up the Panama Canal beyond their wildest dreams.”
In a post on Truth Social yesterday, Trump claimed that Chinese soldiers were illegally building the canal and “always rest assured that the United States will pour billions of dollars into ‘repairs’ but have no say in ‘anything.’

Panamanian President Jose Raul Mulino said China had no influence on the management of the canal.
China does not control or manage the canal, but a subsidiary of Hong Kong-based CK Hutchison Holdings has long managed two ports at the canal’s Caribbean and Pacific entrance.
