Trump ends trade talks with Canada over Reagan ad

president Donald Trump said Thursday evening that it was ending all trade talks with Canada because the Ontario provincial government broadcast an ad with the participation of the former president Ronald Reagan speaking negatively about tariffs.

Trump’s announcement accused Canada of trying to influence a waiting US Supreme Court a case that could doom many of his customs, including those of Canada.

His statement came afterwards The Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation and Institute said the ad misrepresented a presidential radio address Reagan made in April 1987 and that his remarks were edited without permission.

The foundation did not say what was misleading.

But encourage people to listen unedited video of his speech on his YouTube channel. He also said he was reviewing his legal options.

“The Ronald Reagan Foundation just announced that Canada fraudulently used an ad that was FAKE in which Ronald Reagan spoke negatively about tariffs,” Trump wrote in Truth Social post.

“They did this only to interfere with the decision of the US Supreme Court and other courts,” he said.

“TARIFFS ARE VERY IMPORTANT TO US NATIONAL SECURITY AND ECONOMY. Based on their egregious behavior, ALL TRADE NEGOTIATIONS WITH CANADA ARE TERMINATED,” Trump wrote.

Premier of Ontario Doug Ford said Oct. 14 that the province would spend $75 million on ads to run across the United States featuring Reagan criticizing the tariffs.

“And we’re going to repeat that message to every Republican district across the country,” said Ford, who called himself a “big Ronald Reagan fan.”

In the ad, Reagan is heard saying, “When someone says, ‘Let’s put tariffs on foreign imports,’ it looks like they’re doing the patriotic thing by protecting American products and jobs.”

“And sometimes it briefly works, but only briefly,” Reagan says of images of American landscapes, domestic scenes and workplaces.

“But in the long run, such trade barriers hurt every American worker and consumer.”

Trump has made tariffs the centerpiece of his second term in the White House.

On Thursday, Trump said for the second time that he was ending trade talks with Canada.

On June 27, he said the United States was “ceasing ALL discussions regarding trade with Canada” in response to Ottawa’s decision to impose a digital services tax of American technology firms.

Canada repealed that tax two days later.
