UN human rights experts said they were horrified by a “dramatic escalation” in the number of executions in Iran, with more than 1,000 people in the first nine months of 2025.
“The main scale of executions in Iran is staggering and is a serious violation of the right to life.” The five special rapporteurs warned in a joint statementS
They noted that half of the known executions were for drugs related to drugs, and that in recent weeks, an average of nine hangs a day have been documented.
There was no immediate comment from Iran. But before that, the government defended the use of the death penalty, stating that it was limited to the “most severe crimes”.
He came the same day when Iran said that a man accused of spying on Israel was executed.
The Mizan news agency of the judiciary described it as Bachman Chobi ASL and announced that he was an expert on a database who worked on “sensitive telecommunications projects” and was “reliable spy” to the Mossad Intelligence Agency without providing any evidence.
He was hanged on Monday after the Supreme Court dismissed his appeal against his sentence on the accusation of “corruption on the ground,” she added.
Mizan did not say when ASL was arrested and his case had not been reported before by Iranian media or human rights groups.
He was the 11th person convicted of spying that Israel would be executed by Iran this year, with 10 executions being carried out after the 12-day war between the two countries in June.
Last week, Amnesty International and the Norway -based Iran Group Rights said they had documented the executions of 1,000 people in Iran since January – a total of 975 reported last year.
According to the Iranian rights of man50% of those executed this year were charged with drugs related to drugs; 43% of the murder; 3% of the allegations related to the security of an “armed rebellion against the state”, “corruption of the earth” and “feud against God”; and 1% of spying.
They included 28 women, 58 Afghan citizens, and what amnestias defined as a disproportionate number of minority communities.
Both groups said the executions followed routinely unfair trials that were eclipsed by allegations of torture and other abuse.
“Iran seems to be conducting executions on an industrial scale that disproves all adopted human rights standards,” UN special rapportees for human rights in Iran, arbitrary executions, minority issues, torture and other cruel punishment and human rights in Afghanistan, warned Monday.
Hanging 499 drugs for drugs was “particularly disturbing,” they added.
Between 24 and 30 such executions were registered annually from 2018 to 2020, following an amendment to Iran to combat illegal drugs. However, experts said its number has grown since 2021, with a total of 503 reported last year.
International law restricts the death penalty only to the “most serious crimes”. “Drug crimes do not meet this threshold,” experts warned.
Iranian human rights reported on Sunday that more than 500 drugs convicted of drugs related to drugs are currently in death at Gezel Hesar Prison only in Karai and that their sentences are all at the “performance stage”.
The powerful constitutional guard of Iran, the Guardian Council is currently reviewing a draft of a espionage bill that redefines “cooperation with hostile countries”, which is punished by the death penalty in order to involve actions such as online communication with foreign media, and so -called “ideological alignment”
UN experts said the international community cannot “remain silent on such systemic violations” and that the countries “must take specific diplomatic actions to put pressure on Iran to stop this implementation.”
