The US Department of Justice has accused James Komi of false testimony over the testimony he gave to Congress five years ago.
The news returned former FBI chief in the spotlight for nearly a decade after playing a key role in the drama of the 2016 election campaign.
After childhood in New York and New Jersey, the young lawyer worked for various federal prosecutors, including Rudy Giuliani in the South District of New York in the late 1980s.
Later, he made waves as a leading prosecutor against the household of celebrity Martha Stuart, closed to a lie about financial violations in 2004.
He scaled the echelons of the Ministry of Justice, but left for the private sector before President Barack Obama appointed him to run the FBI in 2013.
His action as its director in recent weeks of the 2016 presidential election campaign, investigation into democratic candidate Hillary Clinton from a private email server caused a storm.
By crashing with the agency’s norms, Komi announced 11 days before the day of the vote that he reopen the case due to the opening of new emails. After that, a week later, the case was closed again without taking further action.
The Inspector General was critical of the work of G -N Komi on the case, and Clinton accused his actions of defeating her election.
A few months later, he was out of work, fired by Donald Trump, the new president.
At that time, Komi was heading an investigation into the intervention of the Russian elections and whether there were any links between Moscow and Trump’s campaign.
The White House said the shooting was over the handling of the Komi from the Clinton probe. Democrats said this was due to Russia’s investigation.
This statement was given to an additional weight when Trump said in an interview that Russia was in mind to act against G -N Komi.
As a result of the dismissal, the investigation was placed in the hands of a special advisor.
This has led to dozens of criminal charges against Trump’s campaign employees and crime associates, including computer hacking and financial crimes.
But it did not find that Trump and Russia’s campaign had talked to influence the election.
The accusation of two pages is short in detail, but it is said that Mr Komi is charged with a counting of false statements and another for preventing justice.
He maintains that he is innocent and will prove it in court.
Both points are related to the advent of G -K Komi through the video before the Senate Judiciary Committee in September 2020.
He was questioned about his work in the Clinton case and another investigation into the election elections from Russia.
Prosecutors say that Komi has misled the Senate, saying that he did not allow the media outlet to investigate the FBI.
The five -year statute of limitations on the basis of this hearing would expire next week.
It is not clear from the prosecution what part of the evidence of G -n Komi is used by prosecutors or for which leak they mean.
One of the key exchanges was when Senator Ted Cruz directed D -K Koma to the testimony he had given to the congress three years earlier, in 2017.
In it, he denied being a source of stories about Trump or Clinton’s investigations and denied allowing each of the FBI to be an anonymous source in news reports.
G -K Komi told Cruz: “I stand next to the testimony you summarized that I gave in May 2017”
Some Republicans have cited this response from G -K Komi as potentially false because they say he was contested by his FBI deputy at the time, Andrew McCabe.
They indicate a report from the General Inspector of the Ministry of Justice in 2018, which says that G -n McCabe told investigators that G -n Koma had authorized him to expire information in the press.
The President called on his chief prosecutor last weekend to go aggressively after some of his opponents, calling James Komi among them.
The fact that these allegations were only raised days later, the president’s critics said he had armed the Ministry of Justice for his own purposes, breaking the independence of political intervention that the agency was traditionally intended to maintain. Conservatives claim that NORM has already been violated by what they see as guerrilla investigations against Trump.
When news appeared on the prosecution, Trump published: “Justice in America! One of the oldest human beings to which this country has been exposed is James Komi, the former FBI leader.”
His antipathy to G -n Komi has been going back years.
After his dismissal, Komi was critical of Trump and wrote a book retelling conversations in which he said the president acted as a mafia chief, pressing him to refuse Russia’s investigation.
D, Komi will appear in court for a dispute on October 9, where the charges will be read and he will go on a legal basis. The case will then go to the test.
Trump said there may be more accusations against other political figures.
He urged prosecutors to accuse democratic senator Adam Schiff and New York General James James.
Democratic House leader Hakem Jeffrries has condemned his actions as a “shameful attack on the rule of law.”
