Justin Trudeau called a press conference Monday morning amid growing speculation that he will step down as Canada’s prime minister after nearly a decade in office.
Trudeau’s popularity is at an all-time high, with voters and members of his party protesting against him following a period of upheaval that he could rule the country of AG7.
Canadian media, including the national broadcaster CBC, have reported that they are preparing to resign. His resignation will trigger a leadership race in his Liberal Party ahead of a general election due to be held before October this year, but could come much sooner.
The New Democratic Party (NDP) – a key ally in Parliament – announced before Christmas that it would not support a minority Liberal government.
Opposition parties, including the NDP, have said they are preparing to pass a no-confidence motion in the Commons, which could lead to an early election.

But Trudeau’s popularity has plummeted in the past year due to the cost of living and the housing affordability crisis. Canada’s efforts to boost its post-pandemic economy through massive immigration have also faced widespread backlash.

Following Freeland’s move, NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh said on December 20 that his party intends to withdraw support from either Trudeau or the Liberal Party. Singh has promised that his party’s polling team will consider bringing down the government when parliament resumes in late January, possibly leading to an early election.
