Mexico GovernmentMexico has extradited 29 alleged drug cartel members in the United States, with high profile band leaders.
These extradited include the notorious drug lord Rafael Caro Quintero, who was wanted by the United States for the murder of an American agent 40 years ago.
This move – considered to be the most extraordinary extradition in Mexico history – is seen as a major step in bilateral security between the two countries.
This comes after US President Donald Trump threatened to impose import tariffs from Mexico this year, accusing him of failing to cope with drug trafficking and mass migration.
“As President Trump has become clear, the cartels are terrorist groups. This ministry of justice is dedicated to the destruction of cartels and transnational gangs,” US Prosecutor Pam Bondi said in a statement on Thursday night.
“We will pursue these criminals to the largest extent of law in honor of brave law enforcement agents who have dedicated their careers – and in some cases, given their lives – to protect innocent people from the scourge of violent cartels,” she added.
ReutersBy responding to the Caro Quintero Dea Malt Derek Malt’s extradition administrator, he welcomed this move as “Victory for the House Name”.
He added: “Today it sends a message to every cartel leader, every traffic, every criminal poisoning of our communities: you will be held accountable.
“No matter how long it takes, as much as you run, justice will find you.”
Quintero is expected to appear in the New York court on Friday.
Other extradited fugitives include the founders of the Zetas brutal cartel – Miguel Angel Trevinho and his brother Omar Trevinho.
