The firing of the busy market near the capital of Sudan has filled the morgue with bodies, say doctors at medical charity without borders (MSF).

MSF and the Sudanese authorities said the Paraviliac Rids Support (RSF) was responsible for the Saturday attack in Omdurman, which killed and wounds more than 100 people – a claim that RSF refused.

The bigger part of the killed on the market is women and children, says the Union of Sudan doctors.

The RSF and Sudan army has been locked in a civil war that has killed tens of thousands for over 22 months and provoked what the UN describes as one of the world’s tallest humanitarian disasters.

Over the last few weeks, the army has strengthened its offensive in Omdurman, located through the Nile River from the capital, Hardum, which aims to regain full control of RSF.

Eyewitnesses told AFP news agency that Saturday artillery firing had come from Western Omdurman, where RSF remains controlled.

The explosion on Saturday caused a “full carnage” at a nearby Al Na Hospital, which was overwhelmed by injured patients, said MSF Secretary General Chris Lokier.

The Union of Sudan doctors appealed to nearby medics to assist in the hospital, saying there was a “acute shortage of medical staff”.

He added that a shell had fallen “off” from the hospital on Saturday.

A survivor of the market attack told the AFP news agency: “The shells struck in the middle of the vegetable market, so the victims and the wounded are so many.”

Both sides are accused of targeting civilians, including healthcare professionals and indiscriminate firing of residential areas.

Recent fights have forced response halls in emergencies to close several health centers affecting the provision of medical services to thousands of residents.
