A Zoo worker in Jerusalem has died after being attacked by a tiger who escaped from his enclosure.

Uriel Nuri died of injuries he received during a “behind -the -scenes tour” for visitors on Friday morning, said the Bible Zoo of Jerusalem.

The zoo said he was working with Israeli police to investigate how the big cat fled to the yard where the 36-year-old worked.

The site is already closed to visitors.

Mr. Nuri was taken to the Hadasa Ain Kerem University Hospital for Emergency Treatment at Hadasa University Hospital after receiving extensive upper body injuries.

“After long resuscitation efforts, the team was forced to declare it dead,” Hadasa Medical Center said.

“The hospital’s staff accompanies his family at this difficult time and shares with his grief.”

Situated in the Southwestern Jerusalem, the Bible Zoo tells its website that it exposes the critical Sumatran tiger to the till of the tiger.

D -Nuri was the leader of the carnivorous animals, according to his Instagram page, where he posted videos about his work.

In a statement, the zoo said: “The tragic event happened this morning when during a routine activity to prepare tigers for enrichment, which took place as part of the backstage tour for visitors to the zoo, Tiger managed to escape the enclosure of the tiger in the courtyard and the attack of one of the staff.

“There was no physical danger at no time for visitors who stood protected behind a glass window.

“With the help of Israeli police, we are now conducting a complete investigation to find out how the tiger managed to escape in the yard.”

The Israeli Haaretz newspaper has announced that the zoo is investigating whether the cell door loosened.

The zoo added that “the pain is huge” to the staff and “our hearts come out to the Uriel family”.

Last year, a crocodile was shot after bitten a worker, leaving her with serious wounds that require hospital treatment.

The 62 -acre zoo is home to dozens of animal species. As his name implies, his particular focus is on the animals that appear in the Bible, as well as endangered species from around the world.
